It's hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember.

People are not wrong when they say the roughest memories eventually fade away. With every passing day I think less and less about the detailed pain, and switch much more into a memory bank of funny stories about my parents. I have such a strong recollection of my parents enjoying each other and feeling so comfortable being goofy around us kids.
Here are a few of my favorite memories of my parents being playful with each other:
1. My mom never wanted us to touch her pretty hand painted figurine because she told us it was a priceless antique. My dad loved to poke at her and get her going. He turned that pretty figurine over one day and saw that carved in the bottom with a toothpick, looked like, was the name Irene T. He never let her forget that it wasn't an antique. In fact, he would toss it up in the air around her just to get her blood boiling.
2. Dad loved his yard and loved working in it. He always believed it was a group effort and we should all help out. My mom didn't claim to have the same green thumb. Once a summer, she would walk out into the yard, after my dad had been out there for an hour or so, reach down and pull one weed out of the ground, and say, "well, I've done my part'". She would beam with a smile on her face and a giggle in her tummy.
3. There was one day when us kids were in our early teen years where mom and dad called a family meeting. They were trying to convince all three of us to move to Hathaway Montana. Dad ran the numbers and if we liquidated everything we owned, we could buy the town of Hathaway Montana. Those two goof balls thought it would be a fun adventure.
4. When people say there doors are always open, my parents really meant it. While my parents ran the church youth group, we constantly had kids popping into our house to stop by and raid our fridge. My little brother was convinced that they would only come around when his charlie brown specials were on the TV.
5. In Yellowstone my mom would read every single sign for us and a nature hike would take forever. One time we were walking along a path and my mom fell behind while reading to us all, then we hear her yell, "Ah guys, a little help here". A buffalo had blocked her way and she couldn't get over to us. My dad looked at us kids and said, "guys, were gunna have to leave her behind". Then he looks across to her and yells, "that'll teach ya to read".
There are so many stories that I remember about them having fun with each other and having fun with us kids. I think there is something to be learned from how they lived their life. my husband and I try to sprinkle as much fun as we can into our families life. I watch out of the corner of my eye every time my husband tackles me an tickles me in front of the kids. My kids light up with happiness in their eyes and giggles in their tummies. I hope we leave as many fun memories in our kids hearts as my parents left in mine.
